Lightbulb Interested in learning some actual facts about GW2 development?

If you are interested in learning some firsthand info. about GW2 plans...you should check out this article in which ArenaNet founder Jeff Strain and Guild Wars lead designer Ben Miller are interviewed and quoted about GW2 development plans. The article is almost one year old, but it is the most informative info. that I have found on the topic.

Check it out: http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=161479

P.S. If anyone has other, ideally more recent, links...bring 'em on!

I read that...

Makes me NOT want to buy GW2 even more. One reason is from this quote:
Quote:
Jeff Strain: No, the foremost goal of Guild Wars 2 is to make it the ultimate Guild Wars for Guild Wars fans.
I was happy with how Guild Wars was with the path it had...

Indeed, look at the mess the games become.

Unless they cut out the pointless nerfing and seperate PVE from PVP then i'll happily move on and pay a sub on Warhammer.
Correct me if i'm wrong the point of playing a game is to have fun, not stiffle it to the point of frustration

I wish Jeff would give out his definition of "Guild Wars Fans".

Am I considered a "fan" if I don't have time/patient/whatever to GRIND for HoM? Is it enough that I've been with the game since October 2004, bought all 3 collector boxes AND GWEN, to be considered a "fan"?

Am I a "fan" if I don't like the direction the game is going with title effects and all these optional (yet not really) "grind to be more powerful" PvE skills?

Am I a "fan" when I HATE the fact that Anet gave me reskinned armors in GWEN, and that the "dungeons with reused texture" is a pathetic attempt at creating more content?

I wish he would answer.

Agreed. There's too much of a disconnect between the "old" and "new" Guild Wars. I always had things I didn't like about it, but I was a big fan of Prophecies, and I like Nightfall as well. Lately, though, I've been particularly disappointed by all the skill nerfing and what I consider to be a rather distinct failure with GWEN.

Who are they looking to cater too? Is a "Guild Wars fan" someone who liked the old Prophecies game? Someone who like heroes? Or PvP? What?

I liked Guild Wars until recently.... am I fan or aren't I when he's talking about this sort of thing? The game now is just far too different from what it used to be. There are two very distinct camps forming on the matter... who's the group of fans and who isn't?

I'm guessing by fan me means Players who like ease of access, the inovative instancing, the beautiful graphics, the unique skill combat system, excellent balance, and many other great features. Fans who will like all these features multiplied by a factor of Ten or greater.

I've not had to grind for anything, I just play the game and all these new and neat PvE skills, Titles etc. just fall into my lap, Guild Wars is truly the Grindless MMO Arena net has intended it to be. I've not gotten heavily into Vanquishing yet, as I still have a lot of Quests and other stuff to explore, but I would bet once vanquishing gets well under way, all those nifty titles and PvE skills will just max out, without me needing to grind a single hour. If they don't Max Out, who cares, they really are not necessary. I'm here for the challenge not the Stat grinds that WoW players find Guild Wars lacking.

I don't think I read anything in there that I didn't read elsewhere.

This part has me very concerned...regarding PVP

"So for the people who really enjoy that e-sport component, it's going to be even easier and accessible to them in Guild Wars 2."

You have to be kidding me, I guarantee you that the people who really enjoy the "e-sport" of pvp will not be happy to hear that. Lets take a look at what happened to pvp in GW, all in an effort to make it easier and more accessible to more players.

1) Drop the number of players in HA from 8 to 6 per team...all this did was limit the diversity in styles of play, we all know how this turned out.

2) Welcome Heroes to HA and GVG...what a joke, I won't even go into details on how this destroyed competitive pvp.

3) HA loses holding style HoH, which IMO only added to the instances of ganking...sure holding may not have been perfect but it sure was better than the current setup.

4) HoH wins no longer contribute to "winning" Favor for your territory. A little thing I know, but back when there was the classic battles between Korea and America, it was an added FUN element to HA.

5) Future campaigns brought too much DPS, IMO, this greatly diminished the aspects of strategy and consistent gameplay to pvp.

So, my point is this, when you try to make COMPETITIVE PVP easier and more accessible, well, it just becomes LESS COMPETITIVE. I remember plenty of times in GVG and HA going up against the Koreans in WM, we didn't win many matches against them (if any, lol) but the point is, it was a tremendous rush, tons of fun and honestly, I never played against a nicer bunch of players, always humble in victory and being a good sport in pvp in GW never meant more.

I miss the old PVP and so do many of the friends I made back then, we still keep in touch although many of us no longer play GW, we all have the hope that gw2 pvp will bring back the good ole fashioned competition and FUN

Edit: I have no problem adding an easier tier to pvp...but high level pvp should always exist, there are many of us who need that aspect.

the idea of world versus world seems really cool. i also like the idea of pvp missions.

not sure about balancing power levels for high to low, sounds like temp nerfs during battles.

I like everything I've read about the new GW2. It's going to be WoWlike and that is kewl with me. Unlimited levels. PVE skill grinds, Titles and much much more to keep those that are achievers happy. Too bad for the carebears I guess. They'll just have to keep playing GW1. <grin>

Carebear = PvE player.

Therefore you = carebear.

It is looking like it's going to be WoWlike...and I must say that prospect kinda disturbs me, I really don't enjoy title grinding, I'll never get past rank 5 of any of the EoTN faction titles because it's just not enjoyable for me. If they're going to be putting even more of a focus on titles and level grind I may just not get the game. I'm very skeptical of GW2 at this point, and until we can get some more solid facts from them GW2 will not have a spot on my video game wish list.

I'm also a tad worried about how GW2 will turn out. If it's at all like WoW I'm not buying it, though. I quit WoW to come to GW, I'm not going to stay with GW so that I can play a clone of WoW. That being said I guess I'll just wait and read the reviews, and ask my friends about it when/if they get it.

I honestly am afraid of the possibly infinite level cap though. I have lots of time to burn and don't consider myself a casual gamer in the slightest, but a lot of people like GW because everyone can get to level 20 and be on the same footing.

Another thing that scares me is the items, if it's at all like WoW in the sense that items=more power than I'm going to avoid it like cancer. If they keep the max weapons/armor idea then I'll be more than happy. I'm not trying to start a MMO flame war here, but that's one thing I hated about all other MMOs. Epic loot ALWAYS = more power = who needs skill when you can watch big numbers cover your screen!

Actually, a carebear is more of a PvE player who doesn't PvP, and usually blame PvP for ruining their perfect PvE game.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't AN founded by Blizzard's people because they didn't like the direction in which WoW was going, they didn't want grind and all that useless shit?
And now they're doing the same?
:doublepicard:
Maybe some people will leave AN to make spiritual successor to GW 1 and people like Knightfail will stay in GW 2

I wouldn't mind a title system as long as it is versatile and many different methods can be done without a significant difference in the faction you make.
Know how we can get xp from nearly anything?Something like that.

Somebody post that into every thread whining about GW2 being a WoW clone, kay?

Also, it's an old article but still the most informative (how depressing considering it's a year old) one we have - thanks for bringing it back up.
